Leading the charge in motorcycle protection, D3O, the world’s leading protection specialists, hosted a thought leadership event to discuss the current state and future of motorcycle protection and the four-part video series is now available to watch.
Moderated by former motorcycle racer and broadcaster Steve Plater, the event featured insights from industry experts and sparked conversations around potential technological advances. The experts, which included Richard Harfoot (Head of Motorsport at D3O), Paul Varnsverry (Technical Director at PVA-PPE Group), John Milbank (Consumer Editor at Bennetts/Bike Social) and Tom Booth-Amos (current WorldSSP rider for PTR Triumph).
The event began with a tour of D3O’s laboratory, where the experts witnessed the development process and the rigorous testing behind the creation of D3O’s impact protection products.
During the thought leadership panel, key points discussed included the current state of protection in the motorcycle garment sector, safety and testing standards, and innovations that D3O have brought to the market.
Part 1: The Current State of Motorcycle Clothing and Protection
The first video of the series looks at the current state of motorcycle clothing and protection, how safety standards are communicated, how consumers can know what certification their clothing is and if standards should change to reflect the varying quality of garments that are AAA rated, for example a leather jacket and a racing suit could both be considered to be AAA but the suit will far outstrip the jacket in safety features and protection.
Part 2: Type of Protection on the Market
The second part focuses on the different types of protection available on the market and the specific benefits of each type. Within this, Richard Harfoot provides a brief overview of the main types of impact protection D3O offer and why they are suitable for different use cases, before touching on tailoring those products to each brand partner.
Part 3: Future Trends in Motorcycle Safety Gear
The third instalment looks specifically at the evolution of airbag technology and how D3O’s passive armour can sit alongside the active protection of an airbag. John Milbank also discusses how consumers can be informed about the choices they make regarding their protection and Tom-Booth Amos comments on chest protectors.
Part 4: Development and Testing
The final video focuses on the process of making D3O armour and how these types of products are tested against the safety standards. Paul Varnsverry compares the D3O testing facilities to those used by the standards board and Steve Plater explains how D3O created custom solutions, before Richard Harfoot closes the event with information about D3O’s latest plans: helmet liners.
“Our goal is to keep pushing the boundaries of rider safety by leveraging D3O’s expertise in protection,” said Mostyn Thomas, Chief Marketing Officer at D3O. “Events like these are crucial for driving meaningful conversations that can shape the future of safety gear and ensure that riders are always protected by the best possible solutions.”
